MacWhisper is mainly a transcription app: it turns audio and video files, and recorded meetings, into text on your Mac, with local Whisper and Parakeet models. Ida, a free Mac app, is a voice assistant: hold a shortcut, speak a request, and Ida writes, replies or takes an action in Gmail, Google Calendar, Slack and other apps, after showing you a confirmation.
They overlap in one place, dictation. Otherwise they do different jobs, and many people use both.

What happens after a recorded call?
Say you just finished a recorded interview, and now you need to follow up with Maya.
MacWhisper takes the recording. It transcribes the call on your Mac, with speaker labels, search and exports.
Ida takes the follow-up. You hold the shortcut and say "Email Maya and ask if Thursday works for the next call." Ida writes the email in Gmail, addressed to Maya, and shows it to you before it goes out.

What does MacWhisper do?
MacWhisper calls itself "the all-in-one Mac app to transcribe it all." It's built around files. You drag in an interview, a lecture, a podcast or a video, or paste a YouTube link, and MacWhisper transcribes it on your Mac, with an editor, search, speaker labels and exports to formats like SRT, VTT, Word and Markdown. Pro adds batch transcription and watch folders. MacWhisper features
MacWhisper also records meetings. When it detects a call in Zoom, Teams, Slack or a browser, it shows a "Meeting Detected" notification and you click Record. And it has system-wide dictation, described as "System wide dictation with Whisper to replace Apple's own dictation." That dictation feature is only in the version sold on macwhisper.com, not the App Store edition. Meeting recording Dictation editions
What does Ida do?
Ida turns spoken requests into finished work. "Tell Alex on Slack I'll send the Google Slides deck tonight" becomes a Slack message Ida writes and shows you before it goes out. Ida only listens when you start it with its shortcut, and you can type to Ida instead.
Is MacWhisper a voice assistant?
MacWhisper is primarily a transcription tool, with local processing and optional AI features. With Pro, a transcript can be sent onward to tools like Notion or Zapier, or to a script, which is useful for automating what happens to transcripts, but that is not the same as asking for something to be done. Is MacWhisper private?
MacWhisper's default is local. Its product page says "All transcription is done on your device, no data leaves your machine," which holds when you use the built-in local models. If you choose one of the optional cloud providers, such as OpenAI or Deepgram, your audio goes to that provider under its terms. Processing options
Ida also gives you the choice: cloud transcription, or on-device transcription that keeps your audio on your Mac.
