Wispr Flow and Ida both start the same way: hold a shortcut and speak. Wispr Flow turns your speech into polished text in whatever app you're in, across Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android. Ida, a free macOS app, writes in any app too, and it can also reply and take actions in apps like Gmail, Google Calendar and Slack, showing you a confirmation first.

What happens when you ask each one to reply to an email?

Say you want to answer Maya: "Reply to Maya and tell her Thursday works, but not before ten."

With Wispr Flow, you open Maya's email and click Reply first. Then you hold the shortcut and speak, and Wispr Flow types a polished version of what you said into the reply box. You read it over and press Send.

With Ida, you hold the shortcut and say the same thing. Ida writes the reply in Gmail, addressed to Maya, and shows you the recipient and the message. Nothing goes out until you press Send, and Cancel is always right there.

Wispr Flow stops at the text. Ida carries the request into the app that finishes the job, then waits for you.

Wispr Flow is a dictation tool. In its own documentation, Flow "turns your speech into written text in the app where you are working," in over 100 languages. It removes filler words, adds punctuation, learns names through a personal dictionary and adjusts tone per app. Wispr Flow also has a meeting Notetaker that produces transcripts and summaries. Can Wispr Flow send emails or create calendar events?

Not according to its documentation. Wispr Flow's Command Mode "lets you edit text, draft a reply, or search by voice." The result is pasted into the text field you're in, and searches open in Perplexity. Command Mode is off by default and requires a Pro plan or trial. Wispr Flow can help you write the reply; you still send it. Command Mode documentation

Does Ida ask before it sends anything?

Yes. Before Ida sends, schedules, posts or changes anything, it shows exactly what it is about to do and waits. Nothing happens until you say so.

That pause matters more for an assistant than for a dictation tool. When Wispr Flow mishears you, you get a wrong word you can fix before you press Send. When an assistant mishears you, the wrong message could reach the wrong person. We wrote more about this in why Ida asks before it acts.

Where does each app process your voice?

Wispr Flow is cloud-only. Its security documentation says it "processes dictated audio in the cloud to turn speech into text," and an internet connection is required. Its "Improve the model for everyone" setting is on by default for Free and Pro accounts, and you can turn it off. Security FAQ

Ida gives you the choice in settings: cloud transcription, or on-device transcription that keeps your audio on your Mac.

FAQ

Is Ida a Wispr Flow alternative?

Yes, for Mac users whose voice requests often end in an action. Ida writes in the app you're using like Wispr Flow does, and it can also reply, schedule and post in connected apps like Gmail, Google Calendar and Slack, after showing you a confirmation. If you only need dictation, or you need Windows or a phone, Wispr Flow is the closer match.

Can I use Ida and Wispr Flow together?

Yes, as long as you give each one a different shortcut. Ida covers both dictation and requests that end in an action, such as replying to Maya or moving a meeting with Jordan. Ida only listens when you start it with its shortcut.

Which one should you use?

Choose Wispr Flow if

  • You work on more than a Mac. Wispr Flow runs on Windows, iPhone and Android.

  • You write long text by voice all day. Wispr Flow offers snippets, a shared team dictionary and per-app style settings.

  • You want meeting notes in the same app. Wispr Flow's Notetaker covers Zoom, Meet, Teams and Slack huddles.

  • You're on an older Mac. Wispr Flow supports macOS 12 and later.

  • You need team administration. Wispr Flow offers team plans and an Enterprise tier.

Choose Ida if

  • Your requests end in an action. Replying to an email, scheduling a meeting, posting in Slack or messaging someone in iMessage.

  • You want to see it before it happens. Ida shows you what it's about to do and waits.

  • You want to keep your voice on your Mac. Ida offers on-device transcription as an option. Wispr Flow does not.

  • You'd rather not pay a subscription. Ida is free.

  • Sometimes you'd rather type. You can type a request to Ida instead of speaking it.

If most of your day is long-form writing on several devices, Wispr Flow is built for that. If most of your requests are small things you'd rather say than do, Ida does them for you. For a wider view of the category, see AI voice assistants for Mac: beyond dictation.
